Fox News and Virgin River Drama
It's always en vogue to be doom and gloom. About anything really.
But particularly about the world or the economy. It was ever thus.
And look, there's always bad stuff going on out there. And it's profoundly easy to find. It doesn't even matter what end of the continuum you are on. Both Fox News and MSNBC are more than happy to stoke your fears. God bless 'em...
But I can tell you from a large body of personal experience that the world is actually pretty great. We've essentially had no cable news on in our house for over 20 years. Sure, we tune in if there is a global event of some sort, but otherwise it's largely shows like Netflix's Virgin River for us. Not an award-winning show by any means, but it hits you in the feels.
And you know what dropping cable news has cost us?
Friendships. Lots of them.
Just kidding. Literally no one gives a royal shyte. No one. So we kept our friends. Whew...
I was a news jockey in college. Loved it. I loved being informed. I loved knowing who was who. I loved following politics. I definitely had a camp.
But once you remove all those inputs. Inputs from people who do not care about you, mind you. You start to see the whole thing for the clown show it is. How you're finally seeing things for what they are, instead of what someone else wants you to think they are.
Plus it's utterly delightful to live without all the existential angst.
Maybe you're a news jockey. Or maybe the NFL is wired directly to your brain. Whatever it is... consider severing the tie today, on this glorious Friday. Switch the way you are looking at the world. You will be surprised at what you see and hear.
Give it a shot. The existential angst you'll lose is also the kind nobody actually needs.
All the very best,
John Montgomery
