How to get less done in more time

Getting healthy is no joke.

Heck, just being healthy is no joke.

You see, back in February, I decided to do something a bit crazy. Crazy for me at least.

I decided I would begin training for a 50K.

Not a 5K. A 50K.

Why? Well that's an interesting story.

I'd plateaued in my own workouts. At the time I was hitting the gym three days per week. But I wasn't really getting any stronger. And more importantly... I hated it.

I like being healthy, but I hate the gym. The fluorescent lights. The stagnant air. Just the whole gym culture.

Not my scene...

I'd been following this cat online for about 6 months or so. He was some kind of personal trainer.

I noticed something about him. He was outside.

Always outside.

And he was always eating meat and fruit. I liked his vibe.

So eventually, I reached out and said something along the lines of "You do coaching right? I've got to get this 40+ body in check."

Two weeks or so pass before he responds. He doesn't have any notifications on he tells me. (My kind of guy.)

We schedule a call and he asks "So John, what made you want to train for an Ultra?"

And I'm like "What's an Ultra?"

And before I know it... I've hired him.

A couple of Saturdays ago I completed a 5-hour run on some local trails. There is no way I could have done that without him...

I've gotten stronger, less fat, and I can now run without immediately hitting Zone 3.

One of the common objections I hear in my line of work is some version of "I can do this myself". Let me be clear...

You can.

I can train for the 50K by myself. There are countless training plans and resources available online. And I may even be disciplined enough to pull it off.

But evidence says otherwise. I was over 40, overweight, and overwhelmed.

Working with a coach has literally changed my life. Every ounce of advice, every workout, every nutrition plan tailored just for me. I'm meeting my goals and meeting them faster than I expected.

And when I don't I've got someone to talk to. Someone to hold my hand. Someone to guide me.

But yeah, you can do it on your own.

My race is in November. Wish me luck.

All the best,

John
