Jumbo fruity pebble marshmallow treats

Several years ago, my wife and I packed up the car and hit road.

We were Dallas bound. One glorious night away from the kids.

And we love our kids. They are genuinely the best. But parents gotta catch their breath occasionally, amiright?

I-20 is not the most thrilling drive, but we did make time for a stop in Terrell, Texas. If you are from my neck of the woods you know what that means…

Buc-ees.

I suspect you’ve heard of it. Or seen it. Once you have, you can’t un-see it. If not, imagine if… no I can’t even paint a word picture for you. It’s just Buc-ees. It’s like 200 gas pumps + convenience store + food court + decorations + home goods. They sell clothes too, but be prepared, everything has a cartoon beaver on it.

So we stop to use their squeaky clean restrooms (legitimately the best), people watch, and crush some roasted candy almonds. At the check out counter I always grab the jumbo fruity pebbles marshmallow treat. And before I know it, we’re back on the road.

I was going to write about what happened in Dallas. Another time. Buc-ees stole the show. It usually does.

It got me thinking. Why has Buc-ees been so successful? I’m sure there are all sorts of good reasons. But you know what I think? You know why I couldn’t describe it do you?

Because it’s in a category of it’s own. They just do things they way they do things.

And boy howdy that inspires me in my own business. Buc-ees is not for everyone. And neither am I.

Which is the only way I know how to do this.

All the very best,

John Montgomery
