What passion and gold-plated dunnies have in common
I hate social media videos.
Well I say that, but I’m a sucker like everyone else I guess.
So I was scrolling LinkedIn like the good, dopamine seeking boy I am and stumbled across an old interview with a guy my sister and I were obsessed with. 60 minutes I think. Doesn’t matter.
Now I normally hate crap like this. Repackaged inspirational clips and the like. It just… lazy.
But I’m a sucker for…
Steve Irwin.
It was a clip about his passion for protecting wildlife. How money is great. Gold plated dunnies are great and all that, but if he had more money he’d just buy more land to protect wildlife.
Side Note: I only know what a dunny is because of the kid’s show Bluey, arguably the greatest television show of all time.
But the most striking thing about the video wasn’t Steve’s infectiousness and blimey was he infectious… no, the most striking thing was the look on Terry’s face as she watched her husband speak. It was a look that said, “I’ll follow you to hell and back. In fact I can’t wait to go.”
Heck I was ready to follow him. Steve was a legend.
The video got me thinking. Is there anything that I believe in so passionately that it could create that sort of response in someone?
I think I might have one or two. I’ll probably write about them another time.
But, boy, that question will bake your noodle. Because the reality is that for most of us the answer is a resounding ‘no’.
We’re too busy scrolling social media following other people passions.
And I’ll be damned if that’s how things shake out for me.
What light you up? Let me know.
All the best,
John Montgomery
